The Villages Jazz Workshop was founded as just that, a workshop, or “lab” band;

it’s a place for people who aren’t necessarily steeped in jazz playing and want

to learn more about it. Accordingly, the group is primarily a rehearsal

band, though we also give a performance or two during the year.

Importantly, all are welcome — with the exception of the rhythm section, we do not

constrain the instrumentation to the standard eight brass and five woodwind configuration,

so our size varies somewhat from week to week. While we

do suggest a reasonable comfort level on your instrument and some degree

of sight-reading ability, we don’t care at all how much jazz experience you may

or may not have. Just come and join in the fun!

This year offers an exciting convergence of two holidays as Mardi Gras falls on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s day. Thus, Jean Butler, the band’s conductor, combined music from both special celebrations and entitled the program, “Carnival of Love”!

This overlap of the two occasions presents an opportunity for blending the romantic songs played on St. Valentine’s Day with the traditional and exuberant jazz numbers performed during Mardi Gras. In effect, the audience will enjoy foot tapping to such tunes as the rambunctious “Carnaval of São Paulo” and then humming along with strains of “My Funny Valentine” and “A Gershwin Tribute to Love”.

Conductor Jean Butler says the romantic and festive concert features two outstanding bandsmen residing in the Villages. Margaret Banton, a professional former military musician, has graciously agreed to be the soprano saxophone soloist for “Danny Boy” and “My Funny Valentine”. Next, Lew Buckley, a retired Coast Guard band conductor, directs his own dynamic arrangement of “The Music Man”. In addition, he is also the arranger for several other sensational selections on the program.

The Valentines-Mardi Gras concert is scheduled at the New Covenant United Methodist Church located at 3470 Woodridge Drive,The Villages. This is an invitation to bring friends, neighbors, and even a sweetheart to enjoy the festive vibes of this combined holiday celebration.

The $15 tickets are available through the band’s website or at the door of the event. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Proceeds from this concert are shared with the Ministries of New Covenant.
