“Life is a lot like jazz. It’s best when you improvise.” George Gershwin
The concert band under direction of Jean Butler welcomes the fall season’s return with a concert celebrating American composers. These musical geniuses influenced the music world with their creativity and dedicated hard work. They came from diverse cultural backgrounds and from their experiences were able to capture the spirit of America.
In a span of a few centuries, American musicians through their improvisational talent and experimentation, developed a rich heritage of distinctive music. Their compositions represent a wide range of genres from classical, jazz, movie scores, and popular music. In summary American composers contributed to a recognizable but varied style that is enjoyed around the globe.
Although challenging, Butler selected tunes from 13 of the greatest of the country’s composers. The concert opens with Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”, a distinctly American sound in classical music.
Other concert lineups include iconic classics by George Cohan, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Duke Ellington. And yes, there are show tunes by John Williams and Rogers and Hammerstein. Butler closes the enjoyable program with “The Thunderer”, one of John Phillip Sousa’s most famous compositions.
Invite your friends to come with you to enjoy the band’s night of music highlighting many of the greatest American composers.
